The International Copper Association (ICA) is the leading advocate for the copper industry. We are a nonprofit organization bringing together the copper industry and its partners to make a positive contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and support markets for copper.
At first glance
PIER represents an international network of copper interests, led by ICA. ICA, along with PIER partners, connects the upstream (mining and smelting/refining) and downstream (fabricating) parts of the copper value chain. We provide a common platform for the copper industry to advocate for our shared interests with policy makers, regulators and other key stakeholders (e.g., the United Nations, NGOs, etc.).
Copper, since ancient times, has been used for its several advantages: hard but malleable, anti-corrosive and recyclable, an excellent thermal and electrical conductive. Copper is also anti-microbial, and helps protecting us against infections. Today, we use copper in pans and pots, water pipes in houses and car radiators. Copper also plays a key role in computers, smart phones, electronic devices, house appliances and construction.
Copper also promises playing an important role in transition to low carbon economy. For example, a wind turbine of 1 MB only uses three tons of copper. And electric cars have 3-4 times higher copper density compared to traditional cars. In conclusion, global demand for copper is expected to increase 1,5%-2,5% per annum due to increasing need for electrification and renewable energy.
Copper is used as a small antenna in many hearing devices. And bonus: It also has antimicrobial properties, so it helps keeping bacteria away. Copper is the best non-precious thermal and electrical conductive. It is used in almost everything from electric cables at your home to renewable energy sources such as wind turbines. And since it can help businesses operate more efficiently, it will play a key role in a sustainable future.
